My dad flat out said “maybe you’re too young for Doom?” when I told him how much the ending scared me, and I immediately started backpedaling and downplaying the scariness for fear he’d take the game away, lol! He never did, thankfully. I guess my heathen parents assumed I’d have no trouble with stuff of that nature, which was usually true, with exceptions like Daisy (or a particular scene in SP where Kenny’s head gets impaled). I really felt like they were missing out. When I was in elementary school, I learned that some parents banned their kids from watching and playing certain cartoons and games, which made me feel so bad for them since Doom and South Park were the best things ever according to my 8 year old self. Wow man, how did you know Kings Quest (1990) was one of the games?! I’m impressed by that deduction! Wolf3D was another mainstay too, Doom just felt like more of the same (but far better, of course). As far as pinkies go, I always felt like they were just “grouchy pigs”, and since they are such harmless oafs compared even to Imps, I never felt any fear from them. When I got to 12/13 and realised beyond any shadow of a doubt that it was basically a “make the game WAY harder” item, I was honestly disappointed. (Much later on I of course learned that the Doom95 menu was made afterward)Īnother great example of kids reacting differently! I was oddly obsessed with the spectre effect as a kid, and the partial invisibility was my favourite powerup simply because I loved the visual effect so much. In addition to being scared, I was kind of pissed off at id while taking my week-long break, since it felt like they had pulled an intentional bait-and-switch with that creepy-ass ending. When the “sweet little dead bunny” music started playing and the screen started scrolling to the left, I was expecting a badass Doom logo with the Doomguy fighting a Cyberdemon to be the “you win” graphic, since that’s exactly what Doom95 shows on the startup menu. In a strange way, I actually miss games being able to get such a strong reaction out of me.

I even switched off the PC in fear, and instantly ran to/hugged my older brother right after I first saw it (LOL.

I was 7, but other than that small detail, that sounds SO much like my reaction to Daisy. Part of that memory I usually don’t recall when writing posts about old Doom experiences is that I sighed with relief when I opened the doors and found out it was “just” a Cyberdemon, since I had already seen him a few times in Doom2 and the small handful of wads I had. You’re absolutely right about the Barons, it was just the idea of something strong enough to kill and hang 4 that scared me.
